The three traditional methods used for muscle recovery and restoration of the joint movement are physiotherapy exercise, controlled passive movement (CPM) and a sliding board. The CAM Device utilises a combination of these three traditional therapies in one portable device.

The principal action of the Lincoln Red CAM Device is similar to that of the CPM (controlled passive movement), but with its passive aspect replaced by the controlled active movement of the patient's other leg, resulting in a totally safe and guided movement applied to the recovering leg. The CAM Device is the exerciser of choice for optimum rehabilitation following knee surgery and for any other post traumatic situation, major surgery or illness, where gentle movement of the legs will help the user to regain mobility and fitness. CAM Device can also be used to help rehabilitation of stroke victims. Regular use of the CAM Device can even help people unable to walk to prevent the formation of DVT (deep vein thrombosis). Following knee replacement surgery the strength of the non-operated limb is used to assist in the flexion and extension of the new joint, the movement being controlled by the patient. There will be an element of active movement in the operated limb, hence the descriptive name of the device - Controlled Active Movement Device. The range of movement of the CAM devices is designed to produce a knee flexion of over 90 degrees in each limb.

The CAM device differs fundamentally from CPM (Controlled Passive Movement) in that there is active muscle input required in the operated limb. Another additional advantage of the CAM device is the active ankle movement associated with the CAM design. Active ankle and foot movements have been shown to reduce the risk of DVT.

Further on the active quadriceps movement associated with CAM device provide natural physiological stimulation. Improved femoral artery blood flow may result from the active muscle contracture and an increased muscle work rate.
