Rio Lightmask - the Rio Lightmask is a patented drug free treatment for migraines, pre-menstrual tension syndrome (PMS) and insomnia. The Lightmask treatment involves wearing a lightmask that covers the eyes for about 15 minutes per day. There are miniature lights in the Lightmask - one light in front of each eye. The lights gently pulse in special pre-programmed rhythms. The Lightmask treatment is non-invasive and drug free.

The importance of light for health is acknowledged in folk wisdom and in modern medicine. In the recent years, many forms of treatments utilizing light are emerging, providing safe and effective solutions for array of health conditions ranging from Premenstrual Tension Syndrome (PMS), Migraines, Insomnia to Attention Deficit Disorder.

The Lightmask has been developed by British doctors striving to find an effective treatment for PMS and a relief from the symptoms of migraine. Photic stimulation with gently pulsing light shown into closed eyes has been shown to relieve symptoms of migraines, PMS and help with a variety of other disorders, such as sleeplessness (insomnia), stress, chronic pain and attention deficit disorder.

Research carried out by Dr D Anderson in the Hammersmith Hospital in London found that the use of pulsed light - Photic Stimulation - helps to re-synchronise the body's internal clock that is often disturbed during PMS and when used during migraine, it can also re-establish normal brain function and stop the pain.

Rio Lightmask is easy to use. Simply install the battery, select your treatment programme and enjoy 15 minutes of relaxing treatment. The Lightmask consists of a pulsed light unit mounted on a soft wrap-around headband. A separate control unit allows the user to select various programmes and to adjust the brightness and pulse frequency of the light for maximum comfort.

The Lightmask switches off automatically after 15 minutes, allowing it to be used when going to sleep.

The Lightmask features 5 operating programmes designed to help with a range of commonly occurring health conditions:

- Lightmask Programme 1: PMS - when using the Lightmask for PMS, you should use it daily. After few months of use you may find that you can stop using the Lightmask for several days after your period starts. However, you should start using it again before you reach mid-cycle.

- Lightmask Programme 2: Classic Migraine and Migraine Prevention - the Lightmask Programme 2 is for use by all migraine sufferers as a daily preventative treatment. It can also be used for immediate treatment of attacks of classic migraine, which is normally preceded by warning signs.

- Lightmask Programme 3: Common Migraine - used for treatment of attacks of common migraine that is not preceded by warning signs. This Programme is generally not used as a preventive treatment for migraines since its high frequency of operation can make its less effective.

- Lightmask Programme 4: Relaxation and Sleep - this programme is usually used for sleep and relaxation, but may also help some PMS sufferers. It helps the mind to relax and gently soothes away the stress. If you have difficulty sleeping, this programme can be of great help.

- Lightmask Programme 5: Advanced - this programme starts with operating the lights at 30 pulses per second. However, you may vary the light pulse frequency from 5 to 50 pulses per second. This programme has a wide range of frequency adjustments, when compared to the other programmes of limited range of frequencies around their preset levels. Programme 5 is therefore used to experiment with different pulse frequencies. You may find that there is a particular frequency which you will find most pleasant and more effective in your specific condition than the standard programme(s).

The Lightmask is powered by a single 6V alkaline battery PX27A.
