However, please note that Beurer Diagnostic Scales are indicated for personal use only and their use in hospitals or clinics is not recommended. Introduction to Diagnostic Scales
Diagnostic scales measure body weight, body fat, body water, bone mass and the percentage of muscle in your body (muscle ratio). The diagnostic scales operate on the principle of Bioelectric Resistance Analysis, during which a completely safe mini current determines proportions of body tissues. Bioelectric resistance analysis is frequently referred to as Bioelectric Impedance Analysis - BIA. Muscle tissues and water have good electrical conductivity and offer a low resistance to the passing current. Fatty tissues hardly conduct electric current and therefore have very low conductivity and present a very high resistance.
Diagnostic scales perform the measurements of body tissues accurately, speedily and conveniently. You can use your diagnostic scales regularly and without any inconvenience in the privacy of your own home. However, please remember to follow recommendations and perform body weighing and body weight parameters analyzing correctly. For instance, it is important to weigh yourself at the same time of day (i.e. first thing in the morning) and in same conditions (i.e. undressed and on empty stomach).
Using Beurer Diagnostic Scale
You should only count results that last! Crash diets and short term weight loss do not produce lasting outcomes and are bad for your overall health. You will always gain lost weight back. Very often you end up heavier than ever before. Short time weight fluctuations (i.e. weigh loss or weight gain over few days) are most often due to fluid loss or fluid retention respectively. Short term weight changes are simply changes in body water content; whilst mid and long term weight changes signal a reduction or an increase in the percentages of body fat and muscle mass.
Bone mass (BM): During our lifetime, our bones are subject to the natural development, degeneration and aging process. Bone mass increases in childhood and reaches its peak in our twenties. Thereafter begins to gradually decline with age. Healthy nutrition and regular exercise help to keep your bones healthy and strong. Diagnostic scales measure the weight of your bones – the bone mass. The bone mass does not give the bone density value as it is measured by medical bone scanners used in the assessment of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases.
Basal metabolic rate (BMR): Basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy required by the body at complete rest (i.e. lying in bed for 24 hours) to maintain its basic functions. The BMR value depends on weight, height and age. This essential amount of energy is used up by your body at all times to sustain life.
Active metabolic rate (AMR): Active metabolic rate (AMR) is the amount of energy required daily by the body in its active state. The energy consumption of a person rises with increased physical activity. The greater the physical activity, the greater the amount of energy required.

Weight values, body fat, body water and muscle percentage are interpreted directly on the LCD display with evaluation graphic for easy interpretation and understanding of results. The diagnostic scales BG55W and BG55B display your weight and bone mass in kg, pounds or stones according to your selected preference.
The diagnostic scales measure your active metabolic rate relevant to the degree of entered activity. The AMR is displayed in kcal. If you consume fewer kcal than required over a period of time, you will begin to burn off fat and your weight will reduce. If you continually consume more calories, more fat will be stored and your weight will increase.
The diagnostic scales also measure the weight of your bones – the bone mass. However, they do not measure the bone density that can only be determined by a bone scan. Diagnostic scales cannot therefore be used to determine changes to the bone density caused by osteoporosis or other metabolic bone disease conditions. The diagnostic scales display the BMR in kcal per day (kcal/day), using the scientifically recognised Harris - Benedict Equation formula.
