About cold therapy
Cold and heat are the first pain relief therapies known to mankind. Cool applications (i.e. ointments made of ingredients with cooling effects, snow, ice or cold running water, cold baths, etc.) have been used for soothing and healing of different complaints over the centuries. More recently, cold therapy has been studied and thoroughly researched for its effectiveness, safety and acceptability.
BIOFROST® Cold Therapy Gels work by disrupting and weakening pain signals and even stopping pain signals from reaching the brain as well as by stimulating body’s own natural healing mechanisms and processes. Cold gel stimulates body’s own recovery mechanism. Fast and effective cooling helps to relieve painful conditions. Localised skin surface cooling reduces superficial blood vessels (i.e. vasoconstriction) and subsequently expands them (i.e. vasodilation), thus stimulating local blood flow. Increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to the local tissues and cells, boosting local metabolism and enhancing body’s own healing and recovery processes. Medical research suggests that to achieve vasoconstriction and subsequent vasodilation, the skin must be effectively cooled by circa 6 – 8 degrees C.
