Muscle Assessment and Muscle Rehabilitation

Neurotrac for Muscle Assessment and Muscle Rehabilitation

Electromyography (EMG), EMG Biofeedback and EMG triggered Stimulation (ETS)

A variety of different methods and different medical devices are employed in diagnosing, assessing and retraining weakened muscles. EMG Biofeedback based Neuromuscular Stimulation is used very successfully by health professionals throughout the world for evaluation and retraining of different muscle groups, helping people to recover from a number of conditions, such as stroke, continence problems (i.e. stress incontinence) and pelvic floor related sexual dysfunction.

Neurotrac is the most widely recommended brand of electrotherapy machines by health professionals in the United Kingdom. Neurotrac is designed and developed by UK manufacturer Verity Medical. Neurotrac devices include Neurotrac muscle assessment (emg) devices, Neurotrac muscle rehabilitation devices, Neurotrac stimulators and Neurotrac Tens machines. Neurotrac emg software for use with Neurotrac emg devices enables data storage and comprehensive analysis on a PC.

Electromyography (EMG)

Click to enlarge dual channel electromyography graph.Electromyography (EMG) is a test that detects electrical activities within muscles. EMG allows the measurement of muscle responses as triggered by the stimulation of the appropriate nerves. When the measurements are displayed, either visually or audibly, the evaluation of the measured variable can be made. This process is called "biofeedback". The EMG provides biofeedback based on the relationship between the tension and the relaxation of the muscle. Electrodes/probes are placed over the chosen muscle/muscle group. The electrical signals detected are proportionate to the actual activities of the stimulated muscle, thus representing/portraying the actual strengths and weaknesses of the muscle. The electrical measurements expressed in microvolts are subsequently interpreted to form the basis of the diagnosis. Correct diagnosis enables the implementation of the appropriateClick to enlarge a sample EMG program report. "needs based" neuromuscular stimulation programmes for effective muscle re-education and rehabilitation. An extra benefit of paramount importance presented by the EMG Biofeedback is that it allows the patients to verify and visualise their own situation and facilitate their own progress, thus providing ongoing motivation and encouragement.

EMG Biofeedback therapy is used very successfully by health professionals throughout the world in the evaluation and the treatment of a growing number of conditions, such as:

• Incontinence
• Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
• Myofascitis
• Myofacial Pain
• Phantom Limb Pain
• Neck and Shoulder Girdle Pain
• Repetitive Strain Injury

EMG triggered Stimulation (ETS) enables patients to trigger neuromuscular stimulation that is appropriate to their muscle status. Muscle assessment device such as the NeuroTrac ETS continually monitors progress made, detecting changes to the muscle strength and automatically increasing the EMG threshold for stepwise progression without damaging the rehabilitated muscle by over-exertion.

Neuromuscular Stimulation

Neuromuscular Stimulation can be described as a low volt electric stimulation of motor nerves that causes a muscle or a group of muscles to contract. Repeated contraction and relaxation of muscles has been found effective in a treatment of many vascular conditions and musculoskeletal disorders, such as those listed above. Retraining weak pelvic floor muscles to prevent urinary incontinence or eradicate symptoms of sexual dysfunction are amongst the conditions that respond most successfully to low voltage micro current neuromuscular stimulation. Stimulation of skeletal muscles by electrical micro impulses (i.e. EMS = electric nueromuscular stimulation) causing repeated muscular contractions (i.e. twitching exercising) has proven most useful aid in recoveries from many disabling conditions during which prolonged periods of inactivity lead to muscle weakness and even muscle wasting. Electrical neuromuscular stimulators are often referred to as STIM electrotherapy devices or STIMS.

Neuromuscular stimulation is used for the following purposes:

• Increase muscle strength
• Promote continence
• Maintain or improve range of movements
• Increase and improve blood supply to the muscle
• Warm up prior to exercising
• Alleviate muscle spasm
• Change muscle tone
• Prevent disuse atrophy

• Pain relief

Pressure Biofeedback Pelvic Floor Muscle Assessment with Perineometer

Perineometers are Pressure Biofeedback devices that focus on the conditions of pelvic floor muscles, such as incontinence or sexual problems, including erectile dysfunction. Perineometers, such as Peritron measure the strength of voluntary contractions of the perineum, helping clinicians to diagnose and treat problems caused by or arising from pelvic floor muscle weakness.

  • PFX2V – pressure biofeedback pelvic floor trainer with vaginal sensor.   Buy PFX2V Online NOW!
  • PFXA - especially adapted and calibrated pelvic floor trainer with biofeedback designed for strengthening of the weakened anal sphincter for use by men and women.   Buy PFXA Online NOW!

Please note that muscle assessment devices, neuromuscular stimulators and pelvic floor pressure biofeedback devices are VAT exempt, when purchased for personal use by people with relevant chronic problems or disabilities. VAT Declaration Form must be submitted at the time of purchase. You can do this online in our Online Shop.

Standard rate of VAT applies to purchases by professionals, institutions (i.e. hospitals, clinics, care homes) and to private purchases by people without relevant chronic complaint or disability.

You will find both the VAT exempt and the standard rate of VAT charged devices in our online shop. Please choose appropriately as required.

Pelvic floor problems arising from pelvic muscle weakness are implicated in the development of incontinence and male and female sexual dysfunction.

You can learn about the implications of the weak pelvic floor on women's health from the following educational resources:

In men, weak pelvic floor muscles can exacerbate symptoms of erectile dysfunction and post micturition dribble.

You can learn more about male pelvic floor related problems in the following works from Grace Dorey and Kevin Foreman:

To help men with pelvic floor related problems, Neurotrac Pelvitone stimulator can be used. Alternatively, pelvic floor exercisers such as Peritron A and PFXA will help to rebuild the weakening male pelvic floor.
