Using the AvantSonic Z3 Bladder Scanner

The AvantSonic Z3 Bladder Scanner is an advanced, real-time ultrasound device that delivers precise bladder volume and post-void residual (PVR) measurements. By utilizing a 3D ultrasound probe, the Z3 scanner captures detailed images of the bladder, which are then used to calculate bladder volume with exceptional accuracy. The scanner employs Tissue Harmonic Imaging technology to produce sharp, clear images, ensuring reliable results every time.

The AvantSonic Z3 is designed for ease of use, requiring minimal training for operation. With a volume measurement accuracy of ±7.5%, it provides clinicians with the confidence they need in patient assessments. The scanner allows for gender selection, including options for male, female, female post-hysterectomy, and child, making it versatile for a wide range of patients.

To operate the scanner, the user simply applies gel to the probe and the patient’s lower abdomen, positioning the probe vertically about 3 cm above the pubic bone. The device then projects ultrasonic energy through the lower abdomen, quickly generating multiple 2D plane ultrasound images. These images are processed using sophisticated algorithms, which calculate bladder volume and display the results directly on the screen.

The AvantSonic Z3 offers two user modes: Expert Mode and Easy Mode. Both modes include a pre-scan stage and a scanning stage. During the pre-scan stage, the bladder is located, and during the scanning stage, the urine volume is measured and automatically displayed.

1. In Expert Mode, the real-time ultrasound cross-section of the bladder is visible on the screen, allowing the user to verify the accuracy of the measurement. A green outline of the bladder indicates correct probe positioning, while a yellow outline signals a deviation from the centre.
2. Easy Mode, on the other hand, guides the user through bladder location with a green line that appears on the screen. When the bladder is correctly positioned over the green line, the image turns green, indicating an accurate measurement. If the bladder is misaligned, the image appears in yellow.

For added convenience, the AvantSonic Z3 includes a built-in thermal printer that allows for immediate printouts of measurements when needed. Additionally, patient data and measurements can be easily downloaded to a USB disk and transferred to a PC for secure data storage.

The AvantSonic Z3 operates on a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, providing approximately 4 hours of use on a full charge. Recharging the battery takes around 2 hours, and the scanner can be used on battery power during scanning or powered directly from the mains via an AC adapter during recharge. However, it’s important to note that the scanner should not be used while charging.

Thanks to its patented ultrasound imaging and measurement algorithm technology, the AvantSonic Z3 does not require calibration throughout its entire lifespan of 6 years. Each unit is pre-calibrated at the factory, ensuring consistent performance from day one. Should annual calibration be required by hospital policy, it can be performed by the hospital’s engineering department or the supplier’s engineers.
